Executive Director

The Utah Tourism Industry is the umbrella organization and advocate for Utah’s visitor economy, offering a variety of member-driven public policy initiatives, business networking opportunities, marketing programs and educational offerings to help our members and industry succeed today and in the future.

Position Purpose:  The Executive Director of the Utah Tourism Industry Association (UTIA) plays a critical role in advancing the tourism industry in the state of Utah. This will be accomplished by maintaining strong relationships with all tourism and external stakeholders to be the trusted industry voice. The Executive Director is also responsible for generating revenues sufficient to run the organization and create a robust PAC as well as creating and executing educational programs to ensure a strong industry today and in the future.

Reports to:
Utah Tourism Industry Association Board of Directors, but is also accountable to all UTIA membership, stakeholders and industry partners.

Compensation package includes:
Compensation commensurate with experience. Base salary range from $65,000 – $75,000 annually, plus commission & bonus and car, phone & medical insurance allowance; three weeks paid annual vacation

Principal Activities:
Administration/Communication
● Accounting functions using Quickbooks (A/R, A/P, banking, financial reports, etc.)
● Coordinate with contract bookkeeping service to ensure timely filing of reports (taxes, employment, liability insurance, worker’s compensation, etc.)
● Invoice Association members
● All reconciliations

Membership development and retention
● Procure, organize and execute UTIA membership, Executive Committee & Board meetings
● Website update & development to serve as communication tool for the industry
● Produce bi-weekly Tourism Ticker and monthly e-newsletter
● Procurement of organizational sponsors

Communication
● Communicate and coordinate with the Utah Office of Tourism (UOT), the Utah Association of Destination Marketing Organizations (UADMO), Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs), tourism associations, private sector tourism businesses, elected officials and legislators

Legislative Affairs
● Tracking, reporting and assisting UTIA’s legislative strategist to protect and enhance Utah tourism industry interests
● Coordinate efforts for funding appropriation request to advertise and market Utah tourism
● Communicate with the UOT and UADMO to understand legislative goals and strategy and work to advance as many shared goals as possible to create a unified voice for the the tourism industry
● Participate in annual legislative session: attend hearings, committee meetings; testify on behalf of UTIA
● Preparation of position statements and collateral
● Attend legislative events, fundraisers, and register as a lobbyist for UTIA
● Participate in interim session committee meetings & hearings
● Produce Legislative Familiarization Tours (2x annually) by sorting all aspects of a multi-day familiarization (FAM) tour including but not limited to: sponsorship procurement, itinerary planning and elected official/delegation attendance promotion
● Solicit for funds & support for Tourism Works PAC
● Coordinate PAC expenditures, complete and file required reports
● Produce and disburse weekly Legislative Updates during the Legislative Session

Annual Utah Tourism Conference
● Full execution of multi-day conference including catering, design/decor, audio visual, destination discovery activities, evening events, and rooming lists
● Procure sponsors and exhibitors
● Produce a comprehensive silent auction to generate maximum revenue for the Tourism Works PAC by procuring items and managing online bidding platform
● Promotion to encourage attendance and silent auction participation
● Development of Keynote speakers and workshop tracks
● Continue the Utah Tourism Hall of Fame by establishing a nomination process, announce inductees and facilitate award presentation in conjunction
● Work with Tourism Conference committee to assign duties as needed

Destination Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.
● Work with US Travel and delegation to register for event;
● Coordinate with the the UOT to identify Utah specific issues for discussion with congressional delegation
● Communicate all aspects of event to delegation

Utah Tourism Day on the Hill
● Reserve Utah State Capitol rotunda space by necessary deadlines
● Procure sponsors and exhibitors to meet financial expectations
● Organize all logistics including, but not limited to,catering, promotion and elected official attendance promotion

Utah State Board of Education (USBE) Tourism & Hospitality High School Curriculum
● Administer all aspects of curriculum updates and management
● Train administrators
● Arrange all guest speakers per curriculum guidelines
● Manage funds via Utah State Board of Education (USBE)
● Execute and administer focus groups as needed
● Manage digital textbook orders

Utah Office of Tourism Year-Round Education Management
● Manage all events including registration, location logistics and materials as contracted with the UOT

Guest Service Gold Certification
● Promote and sell program to DMOs, front-line staff and Industry at-large
● Train educators as appropriate
● Manage all financials as related to the program

Professional Development
● Attend Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations (ESTO) annual seminar
● Assist with US Travel Association’s (USTA) development of council/working group of state associations (STAN) for more effective grass-roots legislative network

This position can work remotely.

Requirements:
● Bachelor’s Degree in Sales, Hospitality, or Tourism plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience in hospitality, tourism sales, or operations, preferably in a leadership role; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
● Strong working knowledge of the tourism industry ● Leadership experience preferred ● Knowledge of Utah’s visitor assets
● Must have the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the UTIA Board, UTIA membership, UOT, legislators, sponsors, media and other stakeholders ● Ability to travel and to provide own transportation. ● Proficient in Google Suite applications ● Proficient in Quickbooks ● Excellent written and oral communication skills including confident public presentation skills Ability to think and work in a fast-paced environment ● Well-organized, self-motivated and proactive ● Ability to interface with necessary partners to build consensus, achieve goals, and leverage resources ● Ability to meet deadlines and stay at/under budget
● Position may require overnight travel, after-hours work, access by board or stakeholders at any time, monitoring email and online activity after hours and on weekend

Measurement Standards:
● Monthly and annual agreed upon goals including membership, budget, communication, outreach, legislative activity and High School Hospitality Training program participation
● Completes work within established deadlines
● Ability to gain knowledge of Utah partners, assets, and needs
